6,000,000 downloads!
« on: November 19, 2016, 07:55:52 pm »
I accidentally discovered that Lazarus has just passed the 6,000,000 downloads on SourceForge (see below). I think it's an awesome milestone. Congratulations to the FPC / Lazarus team!

The number of active users may be slightly lower but still that is an impressive number.  :)

If we sell Lazarus for $1 per download, we will be rich.  :D

Thank you Lazarus development team for making it free for everyone.

Dear All,

Definitely a part of the correct downloads numbers, Lazarus has had a considerable visibility, so why Lazarus is not mentioned in sites as TIOBE or others?

Perhaps Lazarus has been included how Delphy, perhaps…
It is a pity that some languages which are a pain in the neck are mentioned and Lazarus not.
And in the same time, in my opinion, after version 7 Embarcadero lost the way.

Thanks, Edson

Because Lazarus is not a language, it's an IDE for (object) Pascal. That's why I recommend everyone to collectively say that Delphi, Free Pascal, Oxygene, Smart Pascal, and whatever Pascal variant out there is actually using Pascal language. Stop making each of them as if they're on its own language.

Yes, they're a little bit different here and there, but all are just (object) Pascal variants or dialects. By saying that, we'll combine all Pascal variants into a single main language which is (object) Pascal. I even encourage us to call the language as just Pascal, without the 'object'. All measurements and statistics of the variants and dialects should refer to this main language. This way we'll know how popular Pascal language really is and how many people actually using it.

The lack of Pascal standard makes us look separated and divided. I have a dream that some people would gather all Pascal compiler/interpreter authors and producers to create a committee and together build a standard for a new and modern Pascal language which everyone should refer to. Bring some famous people to join the committee so this new and modern Pascal language would be known again as a real, powerful, modern, and elegant language.

Well… everyone may have a dream, right? :)

It would be fine, include these numbers updating up on the web, it is an excellent publicity of the project quality and its follow up. I think, that it would encourage new users a little more. Larger community of Lazarus, more opportunities for contributions and development!  :) :) :)

I know Oxygene just by reading its specifications but I dare saying that it's more than a pascal dialect. For example FPC developers would have hard time making a compatibility mode.

I came from commercial development in Delphi V3->5 to fpc/Lazarus many years later after retirement so my transition was relatively seamless.  Discovering fpc/Lazarus was a 'wow' moment. :)

Hats off to both the (unpaid) FPC and (unpaid) Lazarus developers!

I can only imagine the (unpaid) effort that went into the recent UTF8 upgrade for example.

If I need inspiration for new and efficient coding ideas, I need only look at the source code for FPC and Lazarus.

As (unpaid, but supportive) users, it's our job to report/fix bugs and write good user-friendly documentation with code examples on the wiki to support the developers in their (unpaid) efforts.

Is a nice record, but that doesn't tell how many users of lazarus are out there.

A way to tell how many users are is adding an user login (mandatory) into lazarus (like delphi, visual studio, unity and other code editors does), so you can know how many real users are using a single version of lazarus, even if they downloaded and compiled it from sources. Else you can only estimate. Much of these downloads are downloads of the same user over different lazarus versions, or even by different operating systems, and even for cross compiling tools. So the number of real users is much less, at least the number of lazarus users that download from sourceforge.
