MacOS - fpc compiler will need to be 64 bit by late 2018 (ish).

As Apple hard transition to 64 bit (forcing the issue) fpc itself will have to be compiled as 64 bit, probably from late 2018.

I recall reading (probably in this forum) that there was no especial performance advantage to fpc being 64 bit, but if "forced" by Apple, then it will be a necessity.

Likewise IDE's.

No need to worry. x86-64-darwin is already a well supported target of fpc. The situation for Lazarus is a bit more complex, but lcl-cocoa is getting better and lcl-Qt4 is a viable 64bit fallback.
